About the Course

Carbohydrates serve as a major energy source and as structural elements in the cells of our body. Glucose is a simple carbohydrate and is used by almost all living cells as an energy source. It is therefore important for us to study the types, structures and metabolism of carbohydrates in detail along the applied aspects.
In this regard, we have created a course on the biochemistry of carbohydrates and its metabolism which has been divided into two parts.
While first part of the course deals with the chemistry of carbohydrates, carbohydrate classification, isomerism, associated molecules and relevant biochemical reactions, the second part deals with the metabolism of carbohydrates. Important topics like glycolysis, oxidative phosphorylation, HMP shunt pathway, glycogen, fructose, galactose pathway are explained in detail. Interactive exercises are provided to self-check and comprehend the subject in a better way.

Course Delivery Format

This course is delivered entirely online. It consists of a series of comprehensive lectures by a professor in the subject, appropriately annotated with slides, animations and wherever necessary, interactive content. The delivery offers tremendous flexibility. You may pause a teacher while you refer to your textbooks (not includes) and to take notes. You may also rewind a segment to listen to the teacher again or you may skip a slide or two if you already know that bit. You may bookmark a segment that you wish to return to later, maybe to refresh just before your exams. While the lessons in this course may be arranged in a particular order based on our curriculum, you have the flexibility to take them in order of your preference based on your personalized learning needs.

What does the course material contain?

The course material contains a series of video lectures with state of the art visual depictions for easy understanding and remembering. You will also be given access to a series of multiple choice questions on the same topic for your self-assessment and a more thorough understanding of the topic.

Is there an exam or assessment?

There are no exams. These course are for self-study. Our MCQs, however, help in self assessing yourself.

For how long can I access the course material?

You can complete the course material over a period of 6 months. However you can view the video lectures for twice the duration of the lectures. You can renew your access with a nominal extra charge.

What hardware and software do I need to Access Short Courses?

You need any PC that runs Microsoft Windows at a screen resolution of at least 1024 x 768. You require Silverlight Ver 1.0 to be installed to view the lectures. You also require at least 256 Kbps of bandwidth for having a good uninterrupted experience.
